Section of Tehran-Qom autobahn renamed Persian Gulf Highway

TEHRAN, Jan. 4 (MNA) -- The members of the Tehran City Council (TCC) have named a section of the main highway connecting Tehran and Qom the Persian Gulf Highway.

From now on, the section of the Tehran-Qom Highway stretching from Jihad Square in southern Tehran to the entrance of the Imam Khomeini International Airport will be called the Persian Gulf Highway according to a resolution passed during the 120th session of the council, which was held on Tuesday, the TCC announced in a press release, IRNA reported.

The TCC made the decision due to national resolve to reaffirm the authentic name of the Persian Gulf in response to certain attempts to use an unacceptable alternative name for the body of water.

In reaction to protests, the National Geographic Society recently corrected the latest edition of its world atlas, which had originally used the name Persian Gulf and an unacceptable alternative name in parentheses.
